Day 2 Embryology Report

Today's news isn't as great as yesterday's news.

To review, yesterday we had 9 two-celled embryos from our nine mature eggs retrieved, which was fantastic news. I was overjoyed, shocked, and amazed.

Today:

1 didn't make it at all.
6 are still 2 celled embryos (1 has had no change and therefore will not make it to tomorrow)
2 are 6 celled embryos, but they are breaking down (fragmented) and are unlikely to make it.

Transfer tomorrow at 2pm, unless I hear otherwise. Not looking great for having anything to freeze by Thursday (they bring everything to blast for freezing at my clinic, as they find they have a much higher FET success rate that way).

I am not trying to scare you or freak you out...but, we had a similar report on day four and on day five we had: one 6 cell, one 4 cell and one two cell. Our clinic only freezes 8 cell blasts on day five so anything less was not able to be saved. We put all three embies (6 cell, 4 cell and 2 cell) in on the day five transfer, and you know the rest of the story. TRIPLETS. So while you may not have a freezer full of future transfers, you may just end up with the singleton you so desire.

Chin up-it only takes one you know.

I'm sending good thoughts your way:)

ah, the old ART cliche - it only takes one! :-)

Seriously - it sounds like you're still in good shape to have one good one for transfer. And hopefully a little bonus of something to freeze. I'll be thinking of you.

Oh - and send me the links to the interview if you get a chance, I'd love to see them.

Not the news I was hoping for. Sigh. The joys of it all. It isn't over yet, though.

Hmm. Will pray tonight that there is one excellent one to transfer tomorrow and you'll be bottoms-up with ones to freeze.

I can't even bring myself to type the uber-lame statement "it only takes one good egg." (well, i guess i just did it...) We already know you had 9 good eggs, so I guess it should only take 1 good embryo.

In my 3 IVFs (at least the 3 that made it to transfer), we put back a total of 9 embryos -- all the highest grade that you could give to a day 3 embie with 0 - 10% fragmentation. These were seriously kick ass embryos, I tell you. And we put 3 back every time.

What do I have to show for it? IVF #1 was a singleton miscarriage, IVF #2 was a BFN, and IVF #3 is sleeping peacefully in his crib upstairs.

It really is a crap shoot. I will be wishing, hoping, and praying that one embie stands out from the rest, waving it's tiny 8 celled arms around, gesticulating wildly, mewling, "pick me! pick me!" Then I'll get right to hoping, praying, and wishing that a few more make it to freeze.

Okay, so I didn't read anyone else's comments before I posted mine. My sincere apologies to everyone who said "it only takes one" and really meant it. I didn't mean the uber-lame thing I said. That was rude. Sorry!

I'm sorry it's not better news. I watched the news coverage - your few minutes of fame. Must be exciting for you to have. You thought you were being brave when you came on our podcast. Best of luck with a better report at transfer.

I transferred 4 embryos - don't know the cell counts - 1-B, 2-C and 1-D (this was over 13 years ago) when C and D have 'no chance' (so, according to the RE, it was like SET). My twins are now 12-1/2, and my conclusion is that the doctors can't really tell as much as they think they can by just looking at the embryos. Scary thought, I know.

Hope that it still ends up working and you get the singleton you want.
